What is Decompression Therapy?
Decompression therapy has been used in chiropractic healing since the 1990s. It is a form of traction that gently relieves pressure on damaged discs in the spine to alleviate back and neck pain, and encourage healing when the body cannot do any more on its own.
How does it work?
The decompression table is a technological work of art that carefully monitors the actions of the therapy and the reactions of your body to tailor each session to the needs of the individual. The patient lays on the table, which moves back and forth to mimic the natural force that your spine relies on to keep discs hydrated. This subtle pumping action immediately begins to relieve pressure on the damaged disc. The resulting negative pressure – or massaging shoulder as very stressed 550decompression – allows the disc to re-absorb the water, oxygen and nutrients that it has been missing since the time of your injury. In the case of a herniated disc and resulting nerve pain, as the disc is rehydrated it moves back into place, relieving the pressure on the nerve, and the disc, and alleviating pain. A nourished disc is a happy disc!
Who are candidates for decompression therapy?
Decompression therapy is recommended for those with back, neck and sciatic pain when all other treatments have been exhausted.
What does decompression therapy treat?
Decompression therapy treats a number of back, neck and additional spine-related injuries including:
• Sciatica
• Bulging discs
• Herniated discs
• Degenerated discs
• Neck pain
What is the appointment like?
The patient and lays comfortably either on their back or front on a motorized padded table. The upper part of the table remains still while the lower part gently moves back and forth.
Does it hurt?
No! You may feel a slight stretch in your back or neck, but most patients report that it’s a relaxing therapy. Some patients may feel slight discomfort in their muscles afterwards, similar to that felt when starting a new exercise regime. Patients often feel pain relief within the first few treatments.
How long are treatments?
The average treatment lasts 30 minutes, but duration is individually tailored.
How many treatments will I need?
The average recommended number of treatments is between 15 and 20. The condition of the injury will dictate whether treatment is recommend weekly, or more frequently.
Is decompression therapy harmful?
No! There are no known side effects to decompression therapy.
