Decompression Therapy Cambridge
The purpose of spinal decompression therapy is to stretch the spine using a traction table or other motorized equipment in order to relieve discomfort.
Spinal decompression is a non-surgical, non-invasive treatment for herniated, bulging, or degenerative discs that cause lower back pain, sciatica, or neck discomfort. This kind of therapy has no known negative effects and has been shown to be effective even in people who have had little success with previous treatments.
Spinal Decompression uses a very specialized force to gently stretches the spine, creating negative pressure to develop in the injured disc. The disc bulge (or herniation) moves away from the affected nerve and retracts back into the disc as a result. The negative pressure, on the other hand, allows water, oxygen, and nutrients to be pulled back into the disc.

Who can benefit from Spinal Decompression?
Any individual that has lower back pain, sciatic pain, or neck pain that has not been relieved by conventional therapies like Chiropractic, Massage Therapy, or Physiotherapy.
What happens during a session and how many are typically needed?
During each treatment session, the patient lies on a padded comfortable motorized table, the lower half of which can move. They are then secured into position by a harness around the hips or pelvic area and is attached to the lower table near the feet. The upper part of the table remains in a fixed position while the lower part, to which the patient is harnessed, slides back and forth to provide the traction and relaxation.
Typically, each session is divided into cycles where spinal decompression forces alternate between a maximum and minimum therapeutic level. The cycling of forces in this manner creates a pumping action that simulates the natural processes responsible for re-nourishing and healing your damaged disc.
Most patients experience a gentle stretch in the lumbar spine (or neck). Patients find this therapy quite comfortable and even relaxing. Most patients report a mild sense of stretching on their back or hips, and often fall asleep during treatment sessions. Few patients may experience mild muscular soreness during treatment, similar to what one might feel when starting a new exercise regimen. On occasion, ultrasound therapy, laser therapy or acupuncture are prescribed to support the benefits of Spinal Decompression therapy.
Patients typically undergo 15 to 20 decompression/traction treatment sessions and the treatment session may include additional physical therapy. Treatment time will vary upon a patient’s condition and is determined by a thorough pre-treatment physical therapy evaluation. It is important to note that many patients get substantial, immediate relief after just a few physical therapy treatments.
