Chiropodist vs Podiatrist
Chiropody is a field of medicine that treats the feet. In Ontario, Canada, the same regulatory authority oversees both podiatrists and chiropodists, who both practice in the field of chiropody. But what distinctions exist between a chiropodist and a podiatrist?
A doctor of podiatric medicine, or podiatrist, is a practitioner who received their education in the United States. They have completed a minimum of three years of podiatric medical and surgical residency after completing a four-year doctoral degree in podiatric medicine. In Ontario, a cap was put in effect as of July 1993, and there were no more registered podiatrists with The College of Chiropodist of Ontario. All American-born podiatrists were also registered as chiropodist.
In contrast to chiropodist, who are not permitted to bill OHIP or transmit a “diagnosis,” podiatrists are. Podiatrists can perform bone surgery, whereas chiropodists can only work on soft tissues like tendons.
Both chiropody and podiatry treatments are available at Wilson Health Services Kitchener. Call us at 548-440-8080 right away to find out which option is best for you.
WHO CAN BENEFIT FROM ORTHOTICS?
People suffering from an ongoing foot pain
If you have continuous foot pain, it can be very difficult to lead a normal daily life. If you are not able to stand and walk properly and feel you need support. In such situations, custom made orthotics can be really helpful.
A diabetic patient
Diabetes can cause nerve damage in the feet, which is frequently where neuropathy first appears. As a result, diabetic patients experience sensory loss and as a result do not feel cold or hot conditions, as well as pain and stress in their feet that may result in calluses and corns that, if untreated, can cause pressure ulcers. Many people with diabetes use orthotics to lessen or completely get rid of their foot issues.

A patient of arthritis
The joints in some regions of your body might become damaged by arthritis, an extremely painful disorder. You may experience painful issues in your feet, knees, and legs. Chiropodists in Kitchener have discovered that orthotics are really helpful.
Runners and athletes
Individuals, who are active in sports benefit from custom made foot orthotics, increasing their strength, endurance and the ability to perform better. Orthotics provide support and alignment to the muscles, bones, tendons and ligaments of your leg to work efficiently and also prevent injuries and pain.
Back and knee pain sufferers
If you have a persisting pain in your knees, hips, and lower back region and didn’t receive any comfort with the conventional treatment, there could be some issue with your foot biomechanics. Our Kitchener Chiropodist may suggest orthotics as an excellent way to give you relief from your symptoms.
How do orthotics work?
Understanding the walking mechanism is crucial for comprehending how orthotics work. Every time you take a step, the vertical axis of your heel must rest slightly inverted to the ground and angled a few degrees outward from the heel. It is the point at which your foot will begin to flatten and lift its toes off the ground.
From this point on, the weight actually quickly shifts from the lateral to the medial of your foot when you step. When these motions are too evident in the case of plantar fasciitis or barely noticeable in the case of a pes cavus, there is a problem. When you use a corrected orthotic, it can help your feet absorb shock and relieve stress and pain while preventing your arch from lowering too far.
Types of Orthotics
When you consult Wilson Health Kitchener Chiropodist, she will prescribe you with either of the two categories.
Functional orthotics
It is mostly intended for people who have impaired foot function. These devices’ plastic polymer construction effectively prevents the arch from flattening. Functional orthotics can also relieve stress while you walk or run, absorb impact from the ground, and eliminate any risk of injury.
Accommodative orthotics
If you suffer from minor foot issues and foot pain, accommodative orthotics are best considered. This foot device is often prescribed to older adults that require a device to accommodate previous malformities like bunions, hammer toes, etc.

The Process to Enjoying Custom Orthotics
How Can I get Personalized Orthotics
You must first schedule an appointment for an orthotic assessment with one of our chiropodists at our state-of-the-art health care clinics. Simply contact our friendly staff at the Kitchener location 548-440-8080
As a Chiropodist, we go through 7+ years of schooling and our team strives to stay up to date on the latest technology.
1. Orthotic Evaluation
Our chiropodist will examine your medical history as his first step. Inform your chiropodist of any foot problems or pain you may be feeling right away. Inform your chiropodist of any regular pastimes or athletic endeavors you engage in, as well as the kinds of shoes you own and wear. With the use of this information, the chiropodist can more accurately evaluate your needs and predict how you’ll utilize your orthotics.
After getting a medical history, the chiropodist will perform a biomechanical evaluation. The gait analysis, the weight-bearing study, and the range of motion analysis are the three components that make up the biomechanical examination.
Orthotics evaluations typically take 35 to 45 minutes (depending on if you are casted in the same appointment).
2. Casting
We can acquire the foot in what is known as the Subtalar joint neutral via casting. Your feet can be cast by the podiatrists at Wilson Health Services utilizing foam, 3D scanning, or plaster.
Plaster is wrapped over your foot while you are lying on your back to perform a plaster casting. Your feet are washed once the plaster is removed once it has fully dried. After the plaster molds have completely cured, they will be shipped to our joint orthotics fabrication lab.
The procedure is the same for 3D-Scan casting; however, instead of plaster, the chiropodist slides a special tablet device for 3D-scanning around each foot. The digital scan is then transmitted to our lab so that orthotics can be made.
A little differently than other casting procedures, foam casting is done while sitting up straight. Your feet are carefully placed inside a specific foam box, which causes the foam to form a mold of your feet. After that, the foam bundle is delivered to the lab. Foam casting should be used by patients who are pregnant or have problems lying on their stomach.
If time permits, your casting will happen concurrently with your evaluation session; otherwise, a separate appointment will be set out for your casting.
3. Fitting
Next, we’ll arrange a time for our chiropodist to perform an orthotics fitting. You will be able to test the comfort and fit of your new orthotics at this session. You will be taught how to break in your new orthotics as well as the warning signals that they may not be functioning properly. This appointment is covered by the price of your orthotics and is usually about three weeks after your casting and it will be about a 10- to 15-minute session.
4. Revisions
If you are having issues with or are dissatisfied with your orthotics, you can schedule a consultation with the chiropodist to talk about having them corrected or adjusted. This can be done for free within three months of receiving your new orthotics. If you experience any issues, we advise getting in touch with us straight soon. If your orthotics don’t fit properly, they won’t be effective. By doing so, we can guarantee that your foot condition is properly treated as quickly as possible, sparing you from suffering more than is required.
A pair of bespoke orthotics typically lasts one to three years of regular use. The top covers may show some signs of typical wear and tear, but they are easily replaceable or modernized.
