Choosing the Right Foot Specialist

Chiropodist

A Chiropodist is a registered health care practioner that undergoes expensive training in medicine, surgery, immunology, radiology and pathomechanics to provide quality foot care to patients. They specialize in the assessment, management and prevention of diseases and disorders of the foot using therapeutic, surgical, orthotic or palliative means. In Canada, chiropodists and podiatrists are the only regulated Foot Professionals educated exclusively in the assessment and treatment of foot disorders. They are requeired to complete an undergraduate degree prior to entering Chiropody school and then compelte a 3 year program focused exclusively on the foot and lower limb.

Podiatrist

A Podiatrist is a Doctor of Podiatric Medicine, these are practioners that were educated in the United States. they poses a four-year doctoral training program at a college of podiatric medicine followed by at least three years of podiatric medical and surgical residency. In Ontario, as of July 1993 a cap was placed and no other Podiatrist were registered at The College of Chiropodst of Ontario. All Podiatrist coming from the United States were registered as Chiropodist as well. Podiatrist are permitted to bill OHIP and communicate a “diagnosis” where Chiropodist are not allowed to do either. Podiatrist are are able to complete bone surgery where Chiropodist are limited to soft tissues such as tendons.

An Orthopedic Surgeon

An orthopedic surgeon or orthopedist specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of the entire body’s musculoskeletal system. They are also licensed to perform surgery in both the outpatient and hospital setting. Some orthopedists choose to specialize in a specific body part such as the foot and ankle. These surgeons generally have 1-2 years of post-graduate training on the foot and ankle.

Pedorthist

Pedorthists specialize in the use of footwear and supportive devices to address conditions which affect the feet and lower limbs. They are trained in the assessment of lower limb anatomy and biomechanics, and the appropriate use of corrective footwear. They are also trained in the manufacturing, fitting and modification of foot appliances and footwear. To become a Canadian Certified Pedorthist a candidate must complete a university degree, followed by a one year post-graduate training program.

Orthotist

Certified Orthotists are health professionals that provide orthotics to physically disabled persons.These individuals provide many types of orthotics, included and not limited to foot orthotics, knee braces, arm braces and more. Orthotists undertake a two years program that does not requiere an undergraduate degree) plus a 22 month internship.
