Migraine headaches have a way of halting your regularly scheduled life.

migraneWhen your head throbs, your eyes are sensitive to light, you feel sick to your stomach, and all you really want to do is lie down in dark and silence, you can’t get much done, and the tasks you can complete aren’t up to your regular standards. Migraine symptoms can last anywhere from a few hours to a few days. Living with migraine headaches is not conducive to working, raising a family, or achieving your dreams. Have you considered chiropractic treatment for your migraines?

Chiropractic care goes far beyond the generalized perception of injury to the neck and back. Manual adjustments applied to the vertebrae in your spine can benefit the whole body by literally working out the kinks preventing your nervous system from allowing the body to heal. The physical effects of a migraine can include widespread throbbing head pain, nausea, sensitivities to light, sound, and smell. These symptoms are connected with malady of the central nervous system – found in your brain and spinal cord.

Why do you get migraines? The reasons are unique to you. It could be related to genetics, or something in your work or home environment that disagrees with you, a reaction to medication, a spike in hormone levels, even stress.

Manual chiropractic adjustments are designed to correct the road blocks in your nervous system caused by subluxations and stress to the spine and may reduce the symptoms and frequency of migraine headaches. Although the popping sound of gas escaping from the joints as your chiropractor applies adjustments may cause you to think otherwise, the treatment is gentle and non-invasive.

Some patients notice a difference in the severity of their migraines shortly after beginning treatment, but every patient’s response is unique. You aren’t too young, too old, or physically incapable of seeking treatment from a chiropractor; they are trained to apply different techniques required to properly and safely treat people of all ages and physical conditions.

Since chiropractic care goes beyond treating pain to include determining the source, your chiropractor is likely to ask you specific questions about the environment and timing of your migraines to help you understand what your triggers are, and how you can make changes in your lifestyle and habits to help reduce the frequency and severity of your migraines. When you come to your appointment be prepared to talk about how long you’ve been getting migraines, how long they last, whether you can tell one is coming on, what they feel like and if they include nausea, vision problems, tingling in the limbs, and other effects. You may be asked about your diet and exercise habits, stressors you regularly incur, and medications you take. Be honest with your chiropractor – they are there to help you, and they can’t make proper recommendations without the accurate information.
